Work experience day 5/5 #Myfinalhour

So today is the very last time that I will sit in this chair, I want to reflect on my great week but first I need to tell you what I have got up to today! all morning I was with Mike and we where doing a workflows on share point and it is just like the coding I have been doing just in English rather than a load of  different combinations. I was then shown how it works and how it is on the website. In the afternoon I met up with Tom again and we went over to the agricultural building and set up two new desktops and a printer, we also went into the post room and collected a few parcels as well as some banter between me and the Everton fan Andy, then Tom showed me where the computers & tech goes to “die”, it was full of old computers, monitors  printers etc.

Now to reflect, it has been a really enjoyable week and I have learnt a lot from everyone who I have spoken to and hope to use this experience in the future.  I have to thank everyone who has been “tutoring” me and especially a huge thanks to Dave Raines who has organised everything this week as well as looking after me!

Work Experience Day 4/5 #Coolstuff

So today was a very busy day with lots to do again, as soon as i got in at nine i was speaking to Emma about what a business analyst does, then I was with Alex B who showed me what he did and got me playing around on code academy and he taught me a lot of functions and commands that are used to make websites do stuff. In the afternoon I also was with Dave and we had a play about with Linux and SQL with lots of cool codes, I learnt that it is always read in plain English and that its actually fairly easy.

Tomorrow is my last day, I have really enjoyed my time here and I have met a lot of new people that are I suppose where I would like to be in maybe 10 years time. It has been really good to get such a broad spectrum of everything here at the ICT department and I have really got a feel for the sort of things that I could potentially do in the future.

Work Experience day 3/5 #Project

So today marks the halfway mark of my work experience here in the ICT department at the university of Lincoln, i am really enjoying it and want to make the most out of my last two days and learn even more about computing. I have been shown a broad spectrum of the sorts of things that IT does here at the uni, such as programming, where I learnt why MACs can be very annoying, for example the keyboard randomly going crazy whilst we try and program some stuff. I also learnt a lot about the computers such as the drivers that they have and how hard it can be to find the right one!

Today I started off doing some site building and i created the first 11 (ELEVEN) sites for the new portal, only 4000 to go and a lot of content to be added, it was simple once i got the hang of it and enjoyable, i had a few problems but i managed to work them out and fix them. i also did the programming as i explained earlier, which took me a while to understand but i kind of get it now. I also went onto the blackboard and ran through the procedure of sending a photo for a student ID card and looked at the getting started info etc that was all really well laid out and simple = perfect.

I have almost finished my booklet for school and just need a few more things for that, it should be finished tomorrow and i look forward to building a website tomorrow as well as speaking about business analysis, i will also be looking at linux with mini Dave tomorrow so it will be jam packed!

Work experience day 2/5 #something different

This post is a day late but i had a very busy day yesterday, I spent the day with Tom Denton and in the morning we manned the support desk and he showed me how the ticket system worked, I also watched as he was searching for the drivers that where needed for one of the school of architectures laptops. It was really fun and we did a quick patching job in the afternoon in one of the smaller comms rooms, i was surprised at how many wires there where in a small comms room! Tom also showed me some stuff on one of the huge macs as well as showing me a few of the ict rooms and other various areas onsite.

Today I am getting shown sharepoint and also business analysis with Emma so i look forward to doing this, today should be another interesting day!

My first day

On my first day at the university for my work experience I have had an enjoyable experience with much to do! When I first arrived I was shown by Dave where I would be working and what I would be getting up to this week, he also introduced me to the people I would be working with. today I did some work on the MCSE research I was set and I got some good information on that. I also met up with Matt who talked to me about Project management and I learnt  about the many processes that happen when running a project. I am really looking forward to tomorrow when i will be with Tom doing the ICT service desk and doing zendesk calls as well as a possible patching activity. I finish my work experience on Friday and hope to get as much out of it as possible. I have had a good first day and i think the next few days will be even better.
